That Was My Name He Said on the Radio

Who it was

Keith Skues in the early days of Radio 1. It was a Sunday morning show, can't remember the name, and I was washing my hair at the time.

I'd sent a photocopy of an article by Jonothan King in Record Mirror, where he indicated his desire to burn down Radio 1, to every one of my favorite DJ's, and it was Keith who read out my name on air.

Many years later, whilst he was on BBC in the East, I heard him talking to a caller in Hemel Hempstead, and recognised the caller as my uncle.

How it affected me

Nearly forgot to rinse my hair. Seriously though, it led to me starting an 18 year career as a mobile DJ - radio jobs were as rare as hens teeth in those days:) I even wrote to Derek Chinnery, head of Radio 1 at the time, to offer my services. I was so excited when the BBC envelope dropped back through my door, only to be devastated when it was a polite but firm rejection suggesting I got involved with the only alternative, hospital radio. The closest one was in Harpenden, and after a short visit to Red House, I felt it was too big a commitment - bit of a lazy *** in those days, always looking for the easy way out.

Lessons Learned

  • Never keep your eyes open whilst shampooing your hair
  • Even relatives listen to radio
  • Never give up on your dreams - mine took 35 years to come true when I started presenting on CRMK Online (www.crmk.co.uk)!!
