Edwards hosted National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" for 25 years, attracting more than 13 million listeners weekly. In 1999, he and the show received a prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting.
Edwards also received the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting for outstanding contributions to public radio. He is the author of Fridays with Red, which chronicled his radio friendship with legendary sportscaster Red Barber, and the recently published Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism.
"XM is the most exciting thing happening in radio," Edwards said. "I think XM is reviving and reinventing radio. It's something entirely new, and at the same time it brings radio back to its past glory. Thirty years is a long time to bond with a particular audience, an audience I love. I hope a great many of my listeners will be interested in this new show on XM. It's a chance to visit with interesting people for longer than a sound bite. I see an enormous respect for radio among people at XM, and I am excited about creating the same radio magic on XM that I have been part of throughout my career."
"The Bob Edwards Show" will feature in-depth interviews with newsmakers, journalists, entertainers, and other compelling people weekdays on XM Radio. Mark Schramm, who will serve as the show's Executive Producer, is a 20-year veteran of public radio whose roles included Senior Producer positions on "Morning Edition" and "Weekend Edition Sunday," as well as Director of NPR Sports. The show will broadcast from the XM studios in Washington, D.C.
"The Bob Edwards Show" will be the centerpiece of XM Public Radio, a new 24-hour channel (XM Channel 133) that will feature popular public radio programming from Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media, the national production and distribution arm of Minnesota Public Radio and Southern California Public Radio, and WBUR, the Boston public radio station.
XM Public Radio will debut on September 1. "The Bob Edwards Show" will premiere October 4.
