"Hazard Alert radios monitor warnings issued by the National Weather Service and can alert homeowners better then any other device on impending hazards," said Gary Maher, president of Safety Think, a leader provider of safety products and advice. "The new generation is programmable so that you can monitor just your county or surrounding counties if you prefer."
In many hazard situations, timing is key. Being aware of an impending tornado or severe storm can provide homeowners with valuable time to seek appropriate shelter for their family. This early warning ability has also caused their use to be expanded to AMBER missing-children alerts and homeland security warnings. In fact, the radios can have such a significant impact, they have even been noticed by congress.
"My congressional district is in the middle of 'Tornado Alley' so I've seen firsthand the injuries and loss of life that can occur when residents aren't aware that a storm is coming," says Representative Frank Lucas (R-OK) in a House Committee on Science release discussing hazard alert radios. "When severe storms hit our state, they could be the difference between life and death."
In fact, in an incident in Marquette Michigan, the radios were essential to a mandatory evacuation of the town due to a severe flood. The evacuation happened at 6 a.m. when many people were still asleep and only learned of the flood through the weather radio.
"The radios really can be a life saver and will be used more and more for proactive communications within each community," said Maher. Since June is National Safety Month, it's a great time for each family to add one to their home.
