Your iPad is a Portable Radio Receiver

If you already own an iPad, you know how light, powerful, and easy it is to use. A continual roll-out of independent apps make it more useful each day.

The iPad's versatility allows for not only productivity and gaming but viewing of video and graphics, and audio playback and streaming. One such app is iHeartRadio from Clear Channel Media & Entertainment which was a "Best Radio App Finalist" in the 2012 Reader's Choice Awards on About.com

The iHeartRadio app is described by it's developer as "...a free all-in-one digital service that lets you listen to radio's top Live Stations or build Custom Stations featuring artists or songs you select and similar music."

The service touts an impressive 14 million songs and 400,000 artists.

App Preliminaries

Downloading this free app is easy. Just go to the app store on your iPad and search "iHeartRadio." Once you download it, you will be asked if you want the app to note your geographic location (in order to bring up your local Clear Channel radio stations). You can accept or decline.

Next, you'll have to agree to the terms of use - which you can first view. I actually read them (well, skimmed them) and the two things I noticed were: you can't misbehave while interacting with the service and although it's free now, it may not be free in the future. The terms of use are chock full of legalese which will numb your brain, yet much of it is typical.

The app's Privacy Policy is also fairly straightforward. iHeartRadio tracks just about everything you do or listen to while logged in. The app uses cookies and "pixel tags." A pixel tag (sometimes known as a "web beacon") is "...a transparent graphic image…placed on a page or in an email, which indicated that a page or email has been viewed."

Navigating iHeartRadio

Once you log in you can choose from "Find Station", "Create Station", "My Stations", "Photos & Videos", and "Friends".

Find Station will automatically bring up your local Clear Channel stations if you allowed the app to know your geographic location. It will also offer other stations by music genre (including iHeartRadio Originals), a list of suggested news/talk stations, sports stations plus specific Clear Channel personalities like Ryan Seacrest and Elvis Duran and artist stations.
