"The Homeless Request Hour" and Other New Radio Promotions

Opinion/Satire

Did you catch where “Dixon and Willoughby” from Orlando’s WHTQ-FM, traded a $100 dollar gas card for the naming rights to a newborn?

That's right: Samantha Bailey and David Partin have agreed to name their new kid “Dixon Willoughby Partin" when the child is born in December.

For WHTQ-FM, it’s probably one of the best spent $100 dollars in the history of radio promotions.

For Dixon and Willoughby, it’s a publicity coup.

For Bailey and Partin it’s 15 minutes of fame.

For Dixon Willoughby Partin (the soon to be newborn) it’s a lifetime reminder that your legal moniker - the commemoration of your entry into the world - was about as important as a tank and a half of gas for mommy and daddy’s SUV.

But, hey: it’s a free country and you can name your kid after a beloved relative who has passed on, a cherished family member, an important historical figure you admire...or a couple of goofy deejays.

I know. You’re saying to yourself: “Come on Corey get the stick out of your backside. It’s just a radio contest.” And, deep down I know you’re right to a certain degree.

Dance for Me Puppet, Dance!

The “Radio” part of me does think it’s a great promotion. The “Non Radio” part of me is somewhat disappointed because it’s such a sell out on the part of these two listeners. I guess what bothers me the most about all this is how Radio often gives listeners the motive and opportunity to cheapen themselves – and how quickly listeners jump at it.

We all love to slow down and look at the accidents we see on the side of life’s highway. And even though most of us are probably in disbelief that Samantha and David would be so willing to trade their kid’s name for some gas, we all are still entertained by it.
