Radio, Where Art Thou? Why Radio has Become a Little Less Exciting

Opinion

By Corey Deitz, About.com Guide

Let's see...who else can I blame for the Radio industry being so boring these days.

While I'm ranting let me just say I'm pretty sick of waiting for the SIRIUS/XM merger to get approval. Or should I say for the monopoly to be given its blessing by federal regulators? I'm not so sure this is going to be better for listeners - although they swear it will be. I know who it WILL be better for: XM and SIRIUS because they'll stop bleeding money like a stuck pig during a radio promotion (again, I pay homage to Bubba the Love Sponge for a stunt done on commercial radio in 2001).

That reminds me: remember last year when XM suspended Opie & Anthony for 30 days over comments aired about the First Lady and Condoleeza Rice? Lame! Hey XM: thanks for helping to ruin the allure of uncensored Satellite Radio. I guess now I know why SIRIUS is swallowing up XM in the merger. Who's your daddy, XM?

All of this and more has emasculated commercial Radio and threatened to dilute Satellite Radio as well. Is it any wonder I've been finding it more difficult lately to find anything exciting to write about?

When Radio began to jettison its provocative talents a few years ago it started to become a gentler and safer place to be.

Ugh.
