WFYR-FM had been dying for a long time. Instead of assessing its resources carefully, Summit just decided to blow it up and start over. As luck would have it, I was part of the first volley of firings as ordained by the Summit consultant. There was a second round of firings soon after and eventually, the whole format was changed and new blood was infused into the air-staff. This behavior is more common in Radio than unshaven morning men are.
If my lawyer had not protected me with the no cut clause in my contract, I would have been out in the street with practically nothing. Instead, the money Summit was legally obligated to give me for the privilege of going away, turned out to be the funds my wife and I eventually used to finally move up in the housing market. It also allowed us to begin a retirement savings plan.
In retrospect, getting payed off wasn't so bad.
