Will ubroadcast.com Become Internet Radio's YouTube?

Dateline: 12/05/06

By Corey Deitz, About.com

ubroadcast.com allows you to host your own internet talk or music radio station. John Castiglione is the President and Director. Castiglione has launched new product marketing campaigns for companies such as Fujitsu, Starbucks Inc., ICG Communications, Qwest, and Viper Networks, Inc. and most recently he co-founded one of the first publicly traded VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) companies in the USA. I recently posed a few questions to him about ubroadcast.com

Corey: What is uBroadcast and how is it different from say, Live365.com?

John: Two main things that set us apart from traditional Internet radio stations like Live365 are:

1. We are going to be more Talk Radio focused and have the "Live advantage" instead of just offering recorded music content etc. We will definitely have music for listeners to hear as a bonus, and Broadcasters can have a show that they play music, but even then it will be live 99% of the time. Nothing beats the experience of knowing what you are hearing is being created at that moment. We will also have a much larger variety of content since we will have a Talk radio focus rather than mostly music.

2. We create an interactive experience. Our Broadcasters can share files, take live callers, conduct online "surveys" on topics or even give a "white board" presentation to listeners. It lets those who want to participate in a topic get involved.

Corey: Do you think the “uBroadcast” idea has the same potential as the visual YouTube.com phenomenon?

John: It has already been compared to YouTube and MySpace and I think that is fair in some ways since it does have a "social Networking" aspect. I think we have a better product because rather then looking at someone's MySpace profile or watching a video clip of someone's cat, you hear what someone is like in their own words, and you are able to interact with them live. I think once we catch on, it will spread in much the same way as those sites did.

Corey: Even though Internet streams are now available in the home away from the computer itself through hardware, won’t the big enchilada for you be when Internet radio is available in cars and in portable receivers? And, do you see WiMax helping with that?

John: The car application will definitely add to our listener base when the time is ready, but in my opinion that is a while away before a big enough audience exists for it. I think we will have a mobile application much sooner that will allow you to hear your favorite ubroadcast show anywhere. If your cell phone can use WiMax at a reduced rate from your cell minutes, even better.
