Johnny Carson Dead; Began Career as Radio Announcer and DJ

Legendary talk-show host, Johnny Carson, died today at the age of 79. Carson, the most famous host of the long-running NBC program, "The Tonight Show", actually started his career in Radio.

After leaving the University of Nebraska, he became a radio announcer and disc-jockey at KFAB, Lincoln, Nebraska in 1948.

From 1950 to 1951, he worked as an announcer for WOW and WOW-TV in Omaha, Nebraska.

Carson moved to Los Angeles in 1950 to become the announcer at KNXT-TV.

Beginning in 1951, Johnny Carson made the transition to TV with a comedy-variety show called "Carson's Corner" on KNXT-TV.

Between 1951 and 1962, Carson performed as a writer and fill-in host for Red Skleton and also hosted a quiz show, "The Johnny Carson Show".

In 1962, he took over hosting duties on "The Tonight Show" where he remained until May 22, 1992.

It's reported Carson quietly passed away from emphysema, surrounded by his family.
