Today has been an awful day for news about the deaths of DJs.
The Associated Press reports Jeffrey Ingraham was killed this past Saturday night in a car accident near Oregon, Illinois. Ingraham was better known as "Yelling Man" on WXRX, 104.9 FM in Rockford. He died along with two others after the vehicle they were riding in hit a ditch, slammed into a tree, rolled and caught on fire. Ingraham was 25.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Wes Bowen has died at age 79. Bowen came to the United States from Wales in the early 1950s. He worked at KSL and in 1988 jumped to KUER where he became best known for his jazz shows.
Pacific Daily News is reporting that Eugene "Gino the Hitman" Castro was killed yesterday when he fell asleep at the wheel of his car and crashed into a trailer while driving on a Utah highway. Castro, 37, had worked most recently worked as a DJ at 94 Jamz, Guam. Before that he was employed at I-94, Hawaii.
Finally, Richmond.com reports Scott Stevens (real name Clint Smith) died of a heart attack while vacationing in Vail, Colorado. He was 44. Scott worked many jobs for many stations in Richmond, Virginia during his career including Q94 and WRVA. I guess this news hit me hardest because I knew Scott, personally. At one time, we worked in the same building and for the same company
Like so many on-air personalities in this business, he came to work each day and did his job well. Although he never achieved the notoriety of a Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh, I'm sure he made an impact on people in the Richmond, Virginia area. Scott Stevens was one of Radio's foot-soldiers. Without people like him, the industry would come to a grinding halt.
God bless ya, Scott. God bless all of you.
