It's 3:30 AM. This morning, at 6 AM, I will go on the air for the first time on a new Radio station after having been unemployed for about 3 1/2 months.

Being unemployed in Radio isn't out of the ordinary. When I first began making my living as a broadcaster, wiser DJs than I quickly admonished me: "Don't worry: you won't get ahead if you don't get fired."

After many years in the business, and several firings I can proudly call mine, I have to admit, it's true. One door closes, another opens. Of course, in this business, those doors can slam pretty hard.

When they fired me at my last job (last year, the day before Thanksgiving for budget reasons), they were bent on "escorting" me to my office to gather my personal belongings and then straight to the door. And even though I had been a faithful employee for almost five years with no record of mental disorders, violent behavior or even pooching someone's yogurt cup from the break room fridge, (not to mention #1 ratings in our target demographic) they somehow were worried that in those last 20 minutes in the building, I might suddenly snap and pull out a AK-47, wave it madly and riddle the cubicle farm in the sales area with bullets.

Luckily for them, I turned out to be quite stable. Anyway, that's history because my on-air partner and I were hired by a new station in the same city that plans to challenge my old station and quite frankly, take their listeners.

Not only do I get a new job at a Radio station with spiffy digital studios and TWO coffee pots, but now I also get the chance to compete against the company that tossed me out on the street right before the holiday season.

God, I love this business.
