There's an old expression which goes something like this: “I don't need a handout, I need a hand up.” Well, when it comes to preparing for a Radio show, don't be afraid to take either. A “hand up” in this case would be showprep services you or your station pay for. A “hand out” would be material your listeners provide for you. Some of it will suck. Some of it will be gems. You'll benefit by taking the time to read it, view it or listen to it. Here are the basic kinds of showprep listeners can provide you:

    1. Listener Email
    2. Forwards
    3. Website Addresses
    4. Phone characters
    5. Studio characters

Listener Email

It should be obvious to you if you are already in Radio that listener email can be a great source for showprep. But, the key to using it is to edit down and extract the crux of the email. Don't make the mistake of reading the whole thing unless the whole email is essential to getting the point across.

Besides being a source of prep to read on your show, listener email should also help you in deciding what is important to your listeners. Of course, 1 or 2 emails should never be the reason you change anything on your show - especially something you believe in - but, a pattern of emails might be an indication.

Don't discount listener suggestions. Consider them in the context or your program.

Answer your email. When listeners take the time to email you, whether they are complimenting you or bitching at you, they deserve an answer. By taking time to do so, you demonstrate you care. This will go a long way. Plus, you NEVER know who has a book! One email reply could make the difference between a lousy book and a good one. I truly believe that, which is why I always answer my email. It doesn't have to be a long answer. Just be real, concise and thank them.
