Your showprep style has a lot to do with your style as a performer, or at least the style you will develop as a performer. Are you known as somebody who does recorded bits? Characters? Phoners? Witty chat? When somebody listens to your show, are they uplifted because of the content you choose to talk about? Do they think you're funny? Corny? Mean spirited and short with people on the phones?
When somebody describes you to their friends, what do you think they say about you? How would YOU describe your show or the kind of air-personality you are.
Are you an air-personality or a DJ? Does it matter to you which one?
How does your show make people feel?
Written Content
An important first step in making content YOUR content is rewriting material. You should never blindly accept the way something is first written. Look at the following story written by a staff writer of The Times, in Frankfort Indiana. It's a great news article, but it's cumbersome and full of irrelevant information because it was written with Frankfort in mind. You probably don't live in Frankfort.
Your listeners will enjoy this story more if it sounds like YOU are telling it, not the reporter who actually reported it. Look at the first version, then look at my rewritten version. Notice how I've cleaned it up and written it to flow easier.
A Rossville woman came home late Saturday night to a shocking sight a naked intruder sprawled on her kitchen floor.
According to the Indiana State Police, a resident of the 50 block of Orchard Drive in Rossville discovered a naked man lying on her kitchen floor shortly before midnight. When the resident approached the man, he ran out of the house, entered a neighboring home and was later arrested by the ISP.
Justin Blaine Boyles, 21, 4858 W. CR 800N, was charged with residential entry, a Class D felony, at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He was released from Clinton County Jail on a $600 cash bond.
He thought he was at his own residence, ISP First Sgt. Brent Bible said. He was intoxicated. Id say he was disoriented. Why he was naked though? I have no idea.
Now, my edited version:
Out of Rossville, Kentucky comes this story about a woman who came home late Saturday night to find a naked intruder sprawled on her kitchen floor. According to the Indiana State Police, she discovered a naked man lying on her kitchen floor shortly before midnight. When she approached the man, he ran out of the house and ran into a neighboring home. He was later arrested and charged with with residential entry. He thought he was at his own residence, a police spokesman said. He was intoxicated. Id say he was disoriented. Why he was naked though? I have no idea.
You'll notice I turned it from what was essentially a police report into a more relatable and conversational bit.
