Stan Rofe

Personal: Stan Rofe was born in Richmond, Australia on May 30, 1935 to a mother who performed as a showgirl and father who played football for Essendon. Rofe attended Faraday Street School and later, Collingwood Technical School. He died May 16, 2003.

Radio: In 1953, after only three days at the Bill Roberts Radio School, Rofe was hired at 7AD, Devonport. He quickly ascended to Chief Announcer.

Within 6 months, Rofe was hired at 3AK to do the overnight shift, midnight to 6 A.M.

3 months after that, Rofe was hired by 3XY to do afternoons.

In 1955, Rofe moved to 3KZ as a panel operator. He Deejayed afternoons and did the play-by-play for night football games at South Melbourne football ground.

In 1956, Rofe was hosting "Spin For The Stars" and began incorporating Memphis-based Rock 'n' Roll recordings like Elvis Presly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others.

By 1957, Rofe was the top announcer at 3KZ. Other shows he hosted included "Holiday Hit Time" and "Platter Parade".

At one point, Rofe was convinced to refer to himself as "Stan The Man".

In 1965, Rofe was hired at 3UZ where he worked for 6 years.

From there he became Music Director at 3XY.

He later was host of “Six O’clock Rock” on Gold FM. His last gig was at 3DB.

Claim to Fame: Pioneer Australian Rock 'N' Roll DJ.
