Profiles of Popular and Extraordinary Radio Personalities
Pete Mitchell
Pete Mitchell is one half of the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show.
Personal: Pete is a collector of soul music, DJs regularly across the UK and is a cricket lover.
1980's: Mitchel managed and played guitar for local bands. In 1988, he was given the opportunity to share his passion with a show on Piccadilly Radio. Pete managed, produced and performed in bands whilst helping to establish acts such as Oasis, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets and in one of Madchesters defining moments set the band James up to play on the roof of Piccadilly Radio.
Radio: During the nineties, he was introduced by Craig Cash, co-creator of Mrs Merton and The Royle Family, to Geoff Lloyd, a budding writer, comedian and fellow radio presenter.
The relationship was born and in 1996 they were asked by Key 103 to present the afternoon show. Just 2 years later, the Pete & Geoff Show had built a loyal following in the north, which was recognised by the radio industry with a prestigious Sony Radio Award.
Pete left Manchester to head south in 1999 and it took him and Geoff only another three years to win a second Sony. Their now legendary Paul McCartney interview was described by the Sony panel as: "Completely compelling radio. Innovative and surprising, demonstrating that rare Midas touch which can turn a standard interview into a great piece of radio.
Pete and Geoff were promptly moved to Drivetime where they entertained the nation until January 2003, when they were promoted to the breakfast show. They are revolutionising the sound of radio in the mornings with their intelligent, fun humour and impeccable taste in music. The show combines Petes encyclopaedic music knowledge with Geoffs irreverent take on the days issues and minutiae of life.
