How To Create An Audition CD For A Radio Station

If you ever dreamed of working on the Radio, you must first have a demo CD to send to a Program Director. It is not that hard if you prepare, practice and plan.

Time Required: 2-3 hours

Here's How:

  1. Find a recording good audio recording source. Your best bet is a computer.
  2. Find and install a program to record your voice. "Audacity" is a free recording application which would be easy to use or click link below under RELATED RESOURCES)
  3. Do a search on about.com for "Free Recording Software" and download the program(s) you are interested in using.
  4. Install the software and hook up a microphone if your computer doesn't already have one built in.Prepare some scripts to include: weather, a short :30 second commercial, and a promotional announcement.

  6. Decide the order you will record your scripts in. Make sure you use the station name.
  7. Practice what you want to say, sound natural and sound friendly.
  8. Record your voice with the scripts you have prepared.
  9. When you are satisfied with your presentation, burn it to CD and label it nicely with your name, phone number and email address.
  10. Call the station and ask the name of the Program Director.
  11. Mail your CD To the Program Director with a short introductory letter and a resume.
  12. Follow up with a phone call in a week.

Tips:

  1. Program Directors are very busy. If they don't like what they hear in the first 15 seconds, they'll stop listening.
  2. Record your demo in the style of the station you are sending it to.
  3. Make sure you tell the Program Director in your letter that you are flexible in your hours.
  4. Accept any offer from a station. Small things always lead to bigger thing.
  5. Don't worry about being fancy. The Program Director understands. He bascially wants to just get an idea about you.
