Getting a job in Radio is more who you know than what you know. Here's how that works:
Time Required: varies
Here's How:
- I've been in Radio a long time. So, trust me when I tell you the following information. I have seen this scenario play out often.
- Just get your foot in the door. Call the Program Director or Promotion Director at a Radio station.
- Volunteer to be a non-paid intern. Offer whatever hours each week you can devote. Tell him/her you will do anything.
- If the first Radio station doesn't need an intern, call the next one. It doesn't matter which one you intern at. Don't be picky!
- Once you are there - in programming or promotions - learn everything you can.
- Trust me: when opportunities arise, the Program Director or Promotion Director will look inward first.
- If someone gets sick, if someone doesn't show up for a shift - whatever - volunteer to do it.
- Demonstrating the skills you have learned will impress the people who hire and fire.
- When they learn they can count on you, you are on your way.
- Hang in there and wait. You will move up to part-time and maybe soon full-time.
Tips:
- Be willing to do anything and "learn the ropes." No job is too small.
- Be patient. Sometimes positions do not turn over quickly. On the other hand, at certain Radio stations - those less successful - the place might be a "revolving door". Good for you!
- Be on time. Don't complain. Thank people for the opportunity to learn and help out.
- Dress according to the standards of the Radio station.
- While interning, read about Radio, surf the Net and keep up with the news of Radio.
