How To Break Into Radio - The Easiest Way

By , About.com Guide

Getting a job in Radio is more who you know than what you know. Here's how that works:
Time Required: varies

Here's How:

  1. I've been in Radio a long time. So, trust me when I tell you the following information. I have seen this scenario play out often.
  2. Just get your foot in the door. Call the Program Director or Promotion Director at a Radio station.
  3. Volunteer to be a non-paid intern. Offer whatever hours each week you can devote. Tell him/her you will do anything.
  4. If the first Radio station doesn't need an intern, call the next one. It doesn't matter which one you intern at. Don't be picky!
  5. Once you are there - in programming or promotions - learn everything you can.
  6. Trust me: when opportunities arise, the Program Director or Promotion Director will look inward first.
  7. If someone gets sick, if someone doesn't show up for a shift - whatever - volunteer to do it.
  8. Demonstrating the skills you have learned will impress the people who hire and fire.
  9. When they learn they can count on you, you are on your way.
  10. Hang in there and wait. You will move up to part-time and maybe soon full-time.

Tips:

  1. Be willing to do anything and "learn the ropes." No job is too small.
  2. Be patient. Sometimes positions do not turn over quickly. On the other hand, at certain Radio stations - those less successful - the place might be a "revolving door". Good for you!
  3. Be on time. Don't complain. Thank people for the opportunity to learn and help out.
  4. Dress according to the standards of the Radio station.
  5. While interning, read about Radio, surf the Net and keep up with the news of Radio.
