Shelagh Fogarty will be the new Breakfast co-host on BBC Radio Five Live as she joins Nicky Campbell to present the show in the New Year.

Shelagh will take over on Breakfast in the New Year from Victoria Derbyshire who goes on maternity leave before taking the reins of the Morning Show in the summer.

Shelagh said: "I am delighted to be taking over on breakfast which is an institution on Five Live. It's a massive programme and a great opportunity and I can't wait to start."

Bob Shennan, Controller of BBC Radio Five Live, said: "Shelagh is already a much loved character on the station and is the ideal person to step up to Breakfast where she will complement Nicky perfectly.

"Breakfast will be a crucial element of a great year of sport next year with Euro 2004 and the Olympics, and I'm delighted to have Shelagh in place for that."

Shelagh has filled in on breakfast throughout recent months alongside Nicky Campbell, and can currently be heard on Radio Five Live presenting Weekend Breakfast with Brian Alexander.

Shelagh started presenting on Radio Five Live in 1999 and has presented many programmes including Euronews, Drive, Breakfast, Late Night Live and Sunday Service.

She moved into national radio in 1994 working for Radio 4 including The World At One and the PM programme.

Previously Shelagh worked in BBC local television in Manchester and local radio including BBC Radios Humberside, Guernsey, Sheffield, Bristol and Merseyside.
