Deejay Suspended for Mocking Caller with Down Syndrome

By February 5, 2013

Follow me on:

Another day, another radio host suspended. This time it's "Mo" from Q92 (WDJQ) in Canton, Ohio. Mo took a phone call from a woman with Down Syndrome. Kellie Baker says she mistakenly called the deejay. But, he jumped on her disability and poked fun at her. WTSP.com reported on a recording of the incident: "His mocking continues with, 'You don't know who Mo is? Ok, so I can laugh at you and you won't know who to call to say you're offended? Ha Ha. Very good.'" (Deejay Mo, Screenshot: Q92radio.com)

Mo has since apologized on the air. The station issued a statement saying in part: "Q92 is participating in...an on-going awareness campaign to focus on the abilities, strengths, and talents of people who are developmentally disabled."

You can see a video report that includes audio excerpts at wtsp.com.

Q92 is a Hit Music station and you can listen online. Mo does afternoons from 2 - 7 p.m.

I was in radio for almost 50 years. As my stint many times as a program director, I would have fired this guy who apparently hasn’t grown up enough to be on the air.
Btw I am also disabled but still do a show Friday nights on spreaker.com.
I also enjoy your posts as I read them every week.

This is a station that is seriously having some major problems. Morning crew fired even though they had the highest ratings ever for the station because they refused to take a pay cut. Started their own internet radio station, sued by their former station for violating a non-compete clause. The station lost. Program director recently fled and will soon be the PD of a competing station in Canton, where the morning crew that was canned has been hired [just sitting out their non-compete clause]. Hear other people are getting ready to flee because no one wants to advertise on the station anymore. And the BS excuse he used was that he didn’t know she had Down’s Syndrome….even after her sister got on and explained that she had D.S. If I was the station owner I would have planted my foot so far up his behind he’d be tasting shoe leather as he flew out the door!

(3) Fire Mo says:

Mo also violated FCC rules, by not informing the woman she was on the air.

You forgot to mention that the long-term Promotions Director left after the morning show was fired. The replacement for the Promotion DIrector lasted about six months. He recently quit, as well.

The real problem is Q92 WDJQ GM Don Peterson III. He is as inept as they come and treats his employees like garbage. In 2006, under his watch, another DJ was mocking the disabled, on the air, for months and it made national headlines. Peterson did nothing, until the story went viral. You think the GM would have learned. Not this one. http://ohiomediawatch.wordpress.com/2006/08/31/q92-digging-out-of-hole-over-controversial-bit/

Mo (Bryan Modzelewski) has been doing this kind of stuff his whole, pathetic, career. Three weeks into a job in Oklahoma, his “jokes” about violence against women were SO bad, over 100 women protested at the station. That station was forced to apologize.

Six months later, Mo airs a call where he reportedly offers a women money for sex, live on the air. He was fired, along with his boss. You would think anyone with a brain would have learned. Mo has not.

Mo & Don Peterson III are two incompetent peas in a pod. They are both morally and ethically bankrupt. They should BOTH be fired.
