John Rivas, the hip-hop radio deejay known as "Mr. Magic", has died of a heart attack. According to livedaily.com (citing the New York Daily News): "[Rivas] is credited with launching and hosting the first all-rap radio show in the US. Titled "Rap Attack," the program debuted in 1983 on New York radio station WBLS and quickly became cited as an inspiration for key players in the business."

cdinsight.com writes: "The show has been given credit to inspiring such acts as the Notorious B.IG and Nas."

At music-mix.we.com, posters left thoughts of Mr. Magic:

Bob Steel wrote: "...without mr magic...you wouldn't have the music heard by millions as it is today"

Eddie66QueensNYC said: "I will always remember listening to you on WBLS and trying to record the 'fresh' raps on my 'BOX'"

Ad said: "Mr Magic's Sat nite show was a stapple [sic] for my Hip-Hop diet. He connected the 5 boroughs through Rap."
