HD Radio Ressurection: WHFS Comes Back to Life as 94.7 HD2

Wednesday June 10, 2009
Washington, D.C. is getting back something long gone: WHFS - a legendary rock-formatted radio station. But, this time it's on HD Radio. (94.7 HD2 logo, Graphic Credit: © CBS Radio)

Beginning today, "94.7 HD2" sparked back to life at 12 noon with a special inaugural debut featuring D.J. Cerphe, an original member of WHFS from the late 1970s.

94.7 HD2 will feature a mix of current and retro alternative music, archival material, live studio performances, artist interviews, and other programming.

In a few weeks the station will also be available online and via mobile streaming at www.hfs2.com.

Listeners with a new HD Radio receiver can find the station by first tuning to 94.7, then tune up one notch to 94.7-2. (An HD radio receiver is required.)

HFS-2 is streaming through AOL radio – I access it through Winamp.

I have been listening to 94.7 HD2 for about 7 months and I think the former HFS jocks have been programming it since March. It does repeat the more popular songs more often than I like, and the quality is not always the best (low-rate mp3 files?) but there is no other station in Washington that plays this blend of music.

It seems this version of HFS2 has unforntunaly returned to playing bands like seether, staind, and korn which spam had pretty much gotten rid of the numetal that plagued alt stations from 99-04 and eventually killed them. It was nice how he still played em but in limited quantities. This week I heard one of the newer Korn songs followed by Seether and just cringed. Then Shinedown follwed after :( 98 rock crumbiness.

The playlist library seems better than anything else out there now, tho i’ve yet to hear but a one DM song, and the HFS Classics are not as frequent as they used to be on 105.7 HFS 2. Spam’s playlist was perfect for me with a empehesis on 90’s HFS lesser played and favorite singles which was my favorite part about the station how i could actually hear Temple of the Dogs “say hello to heaven” and Pearl jam “given to fly” in regular rotation instead of ‘hunger…’ or ‘jeremy’ all the time.
That being said, 94.7 seems to be a little more new punk rock oriented, probably a refelection of cerphe and co. The 12 PM hr is the best by far with lots of HFStival artitsts and live cuts. Would like a little more depth with the older tracks, heard some good ones like the SMITHS “Boy with the thorn it his side (L)”, but really think there is a little too much new punk/ seether type bands, but they still play the old stuff too. Just not as much. Love hearing Morrissey’s Sing Your Life. So fitting. I hope this version of HFS 2 lives long, and wish it could come back here on 105.7 2 in BAltimore so i can actually hear it again. Its a shame since I got a HD radio and now won’t be able to hear the reason i got it :(
