One-Third of UK Population Has Listened to Internet Radio

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research), a British firm that measures radio listening, has released findings on Internet Radio and Podcasting. The survey, conducted in October 2008 and based on 1,142 respondents, found the following:

  • 31.7% of the adult UK population (16.1 million people) say they've listened to Internet Radio compared to 14.5 million in May, 2008.
  • Most Internet Radio listening happens at home (89% of it), 21% listen at work, 6% listen elsewhere
  • 2.9 million say they've used a personalized online radio service like Pandora. That's an increase of 800,000 since May 2008.
  • Podcast listening has almost doubled: 7.2 million have downloaded at least one as compared to 3.7 million in May, 2008.
  • Average podcast listener subscribes to between 4 and 5.
