SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio Rolls Out New Channel Lineups

Wednesday November 12, 2008
SIRIUS XM Radio introduced new channel lineups today. XM subscribers will have access to selected SIRIUS programming and SIRIUS subscribers will be able to hear selected XM channels.

Subscribers of both services will now be able to hear channels and shows from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Elvis Presley, Grateful Dead, Eminem, Frank Sinatra, Jamie Foxx, Metropolitan Opera, NPR, The Catholic Channel, Blue Collar Comedy, Tom Petty, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, the Grand Ole’ Opry, Barbara Walters, and more.

The same amount of music and non-music channels will be available as before, although some channels have been combined to reduce redundancy and other channels have been moved to different locations.

SIRIUS XM says there will be no increase in subscription fees and subscribers simply continue to use their existing hardware.

my wife and i are very upset about sirius xm replacing kids stuff with xm kids programming and renaming the station. “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” our kids loved that channel and now it’s been abruptly replaced with entirely different children programming that i don’t find compatible with our taste. if you agree with us please sign this petition:

(2) Jon says:

I completely agree with JK. I recently discovered a favorite Sirus channel that I enjoyed listening to during my daily commute to and from work. This morning I found that it was taken over by its XM counterpart. All the daily shows, etc., are now different. Not good.

(3) Kim says:

I always listened to Sirius “60’s vibrations and Sirius Gold channels. They have been replaced with XM versions. The strongly dislike the XM versions. Completely different personalities, way too much jibber/jabber talking between songs and they don’t show the song year most of the time. If I wanted XM I would have subscribed to XM. I wanted Sirius and now am getting XM. I may cancel soon!

(4) Linda says:

I agree with Kim. The “new” 60’s station has way too much talking and silly nonsense. Plus I have to try and find all my favorite stations again…..I may also cancel.

Where is Bobby Bennett from Soul Street (62)..???

(6) nitrobassett says:

Bobby B. got the axed!

Its a shame what Sirus has done the XMers good music format.
I do agree that 60’s channel on xm had way to much talk.

What burns me is that I listened to X-country and it was replaced with Outlaw country were the DJ’s drop the F-bomb 3 times an hour. I can no longer listen at work :(

(7) Rachydaisie says:

I am upset with a few radio stations that were changed. I had Sirius and loved Boombox and Rumbon. The channels they replaced are incomparable! I may cancel :(

I’ve been a subscriber of XM radio and am one of the person’s that don’t like what has happened with the channels that i liked to listened, it seems that you dropped all the spanish channels that i enjoyed listening to, I’m thinking off ending my subcription when it’s time to renew, Bye not happy at all. Ramiro!

(10) camo says:

We have an XM contract….nice to know of channel changes….found out only after noticing some of the preprogrammed channels were different. Trying to find them was useless, trying to find ones similar to them was useless, and not getting any kind of notice in writing from XM or Sirius as to the changes and what they would be was pretty low. You’d think they might give a hang about the subscribers since…gee…they are the ones paying for the service….and without them they won’t have any service to offer. Thanks XM for the notice of the merge and thanks Sirius for letting us know of the new channels.

(11) MikeT says:

X-country was my wife’s and my main reason for going with and staying with XM Radio. Outlaw radio is stunningly poor programming with DJ’s who curse for the sound of it. That was a “nice” surprise to hear when driving with our children. Talk about quick dial turning!
For those who want to let XM-Sirius know that a change is needed, check out this petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/BBXM12/petition.html

(12) Stuck says:

I was completely blindsided when I woke up on the 12 expecting to hear my 66 RAW Blaze session in the morning only to find it was replaced by a second rate station. Then I tried to go to my old school hip hop station 65 the Rhyme and it was completely taken off the air. I feel they should have asked the customers what they wanted to hear instead of forcing it down our throat.
I started a petition to bring back channels 65 and 66, if you feel the same please sign and pass to your friends!

(13) Ernie says:

Hello Sirius,

I’m somewhat disappointed in Sirius/XM’s NEW programming for music channels. Previously, “Sirius Gold” on channel 5 offered classic ‘rock & roll’ music from the 50’s AND 60’s. Currently, channel 5 offers “50’s on 5″ pop hits, while channel 6 offers “60’s on 6″ pop hits. Now, ANYONE who knows ANYTHING at all about classic rock & roll music knows damn well that the golden age of rock & roll was from the mid-50’s to the mid-60’s.

Channel 5 “Sirius Gold” worked just fine to cover that golden age. But, now to get the full effect of that point in time (mid-50’s to mid-60’s) PAYING SUBSCRIBERS must alternate between two channels (5 & 6). When I’m on channel 5, what am I missing on channel 6?? And, when I’m on 6, what am I missing on 5??

NOT A GOOD IDEA Sirius!!! The ignorant (uninformed) fool that dreamed up this new scheme (50’s on 5, 60’s on 6 , my ass) should be IMMEDIATELY TERMINATED, along with his/her manager that approved such a foolish change.

(14) Kay says:

You are incorrect in stating that the new line-up reduces redundancy. It eliminated many music genres — unless you think all jazz, all latin, all country, all rock, and all dance music are the same. The new lineup seems to say Wonderbread in a day and age that cries out for diversity and appreciation of the more sophisticated distinctions between various music genres.

I suspect the executives of the merged company are the grandsons of the US auto industry execs Or maybe just heavily influenced by them with all their work at selling contracts to them. Well, there will not be a bailout for Sirius-XM, that’s for sure. It’s sad to see the demise of what used to be a great alternative for true music lovers.

November 17, 2008 at 4:36 pm
(15) CARRESS says:

XM removed my favorite channel ENTIRELY- there is no replacement. It seems that execs don’t actually LISTEN to the stations, they just see a genre (that doesn’t accurately describe the tone of the music) and they assume they’re interchangeable. They are not.
I cancelled my subscription to XM effective today because they got rid of TheRhyme, and now all the hiphop I can hear is Lil Wayne and others who are saying NOTHING I want to hear- this is why I got XM in the first place, the radio plays GARBAGE, so I decided to pay to hear ‘not garbage’, it seems they expect me to pay for the garbage I could hear on the radio. I think not.
Speak with your money, cancel -effective TODAY- and tell them why, please. Maybe they’ll bring our channels back.

(16) Shea says:

For X-Country Fans:

HERE IS A TELEPHONE # TO CALL TO COMPLAIN THAT THEY REMOVED XCOUNTRY 12. IT GOES DIRECTLY TO THE PROGRAMMING PEOPLE AND THEY SAID IF THEY GET ENOUGH CALLS AND MADE A MISTAKE BY REMOVING XCOUNTRY 12 THEY WILL REINSTATE THE PROGRAM. THEY ALREADY ARE REINSTATING BONEYARD ON JANUARY 15TH. SEND THIS TO EVERYBODY YOU CAN THINK OF SO THEY WILL CALL AND GET XCOUNTRY BACK ON. # 1-202-380-4000

(17) Chris says:

This merger has ruined satellite radio. So many channels are gone. 3 of my 7 presets are gone with no alternative. I also noticed that Lithium is censoring their music now. What a joke. And Sirius has no customer service it seems. I’ve sent 4 emails with no response, despite the fact that they tell you you’ll get an answer within 24 hours. I can’t tell you how PO’d I am.

November 18, 2008 at 7:16 am
(18) Pinky says:

We need to collectively make sure Sirius is aware that we as CUSTOMERS know this is unacceptable. Jon Zellner - SVP of Music Programming at Sirius/XM stated that they will “monitor customer feedback and re-evaluate early next year”. Voicing your opinion WILL make a difference.

Please let them know so we can possibly get this reversed. Read this article for more…

(19) Quincy says:

I can’t begin to tell you how unhappy I am with the channel merger. I listen to a wide range of music and one of my favorite channels were 66 RAW for the blaze sessions and progressive hip-hop, now I have neither. I really hate how now it has been replaced with a station that I have NO interest in listening to. Like Chris above me I have sent e-mail to that so called customer service with no response. I feel that canceling my service is the best option left… How sad that is has come to this

(20) Kim says:

I thought that a pay-to-listen radio like Sirius would have channels according to what the listeners want, after all is this not who pays for it and keeps your business?Unfortunately Sirius does obviously not care what their listeners want to listen to, since overnight the only channel I listened to dissapeared, that channel was “Rumbon”. Instead you replaced that with the ridiculous “Caliente”,which I refuse to listen to. BRING MY CHANNEL BACK OR I WILL HAVE TO CANCEL AND GET MY MONEY REFUNDED FROM YOU!

November 19, 2008 at 5:37 pm
(21) DI says:

I was an XM subscriber and am also very dissappointed in the new lineup. I keep trying to find channels to replace the ones that were “merged”, but I’m having no luck. I can’t find a station that comes close to what the Starbucks station had. It seems Starbucks is split up into like 3 different stations.

I keep wondering why I am paying to be dissappointed.

My son and I loved Kids Stuff 116! I can’t believe they have changed to an entirely different format! My son and I were trying to listen yesterday and there was a song about butts. My son even said, “Mommy, what are they singing about? That is not a word we say.” From that point, I turned it off and it hasn’t been on since! The radio people have completely ignored that we pay for the format and music. I signed the petition…others please do as well. Maybe someone will hear us?

(23) Michael says:

Why are you all surprised at these changes? If you have a town with two resturants and they both offer different menus, there is variety and something for everyone. But if those two resturants merge, and become one…you have no choice and the menu must be streamlined for the new resturaunt. We the subscribers are being given two choices now, like it or leave it. Not to mention that people like me have lost tens of thousands of dollars on Sirius stock, which is now worth .17 cents. I canceled all three of my Sirius subscriptions…when they asked why I simply told them it has no value to me anymore…just like the stock price. Wake up Sirius xm before you lose your only reason for being in buisness…to make money!!

(25) Dan in NJ says:

Good point about Sirius becoming more like terrestrial radio (garbage). Just want to reiterate about the “dj’s” jabbering over the music on the 60’s station. It couldn’t possibly be more annoying. Who exactly wants that? I’m just grateful they haven’t tampered with the Underground Garage - so far…

(26) jim says:

HATE the new XM .. babbling DJ’s, PLAYLISTS.. basically it’s not much different from FM, except WE have to pay $12 a month !

Why did they have to change things so drastically ??
